Israeli and Palestinian children painting the "Make Peace, End the Occupation" Billboard designed by Combatants for Peace, Saturday, May 26th, 2007 Memorial Day Week End
Report filed May 27th
Bethlehem, in Palestine.
Over 45 Israelis and over 50 Palestinians joined together to paint the Peace sign, as planned, on time, with chaos, laughter, and spilled paint. Customs prevented our order of sign paint from arriving, and we were forced to find house paint and color pigment to mix the paint on site on demand. Russell worked like a mad man taking paint orders as Palestinian and Israeli children worked in 7 teams of six children per team to paint the sign. "Most of the Israeli children have never met an Arab", says Avner Wishnitze, from Combatants for Peace. And so, after a conference with Sulaiman from the Palestinian side, the leaders divided the children into groups mixing Palestinians, Israeli Arabs, and Israeli jews. Each group had an adult translator for the children. It was a wonderful time.
